EU Legislation Draws Near as Women Fear Insurance Premium HikesNovember 13, 2012
It’s difficult being a young male and attempting to have anything to do with driving without having enough spare cash lying around to create a 1:1 scale model of the Effiel Tower out of shredded £20 notes. As the stereotype tears up the streets, wreaking havoc on the local towns people and ramping up those delicious accident figures that insurance companies brandish about whenever this pricing system is pulled into question, what are young males who wish to get behind the wheel supposed to do?
Well, it’s certainly not wait for Governmental legislation to solve the problem if that’s what you were thinking.
From 21st of December insurers are prohibited from utilizing gender to ramp up the premiums, equalizing all sexes and creating peace throughout the land. It’s like the suffragette movement in a strange alternative universe. Except of course, it’s not like that at all, because insurers are grinning again, and are, in fact, simply having the female species cough up the cash they’ve been saving all this time.
GoCompare’s head of motor insurance Scott Kelly told The Guardian ‘women drivers will see their premiums rise by just over £300 on average, but for younger age groups, the increase could be as much as £2,000’
Fortunately, there is a slim chance this won’t happen with quite the devastating price hikes currently being forcasted, as many insurers themselves are currently remaining tight-lipped about the whole affair.
One interesting tip for younger women whose policy is up for renewal in January, is that they may be better off cancelling beforehand and taking out a new one before the 21st December legislation kicks in, securing that extra year of reasonably priced insurance.
Of course, arguments in favour of the ruling claim the original system didn’t work either, and a premium based entirely on gender is an out of date attitude. Whilst there’s truth in those words, surely bringing down the male premiums slightly and upping the female policies, to meet innately in the middle would be a more appropriate path to take.
